In simple words
A hernia is a weak spot in the muscle wall through which the inside pushes out, making a bulge. In keyhole repair, the surgeon works through small cuts using a camera, and places a mesh to strengthen the weak area.
Who needs this treatment
- A bulge in the groin or stomach that comes out on coughing or lifting
- A bulge that has grown bigger over months
- Dragging discomfort at the end of the day
- An old operation scar with a bulge underneath
What happens, step by step
- You are given anaesthesia and sleep through the operation
- Two or three small cuts are made
- A camera and thin instruments go in through those cuts
- A mesh is placed to support the weak muscle wall
- The small cuts are closed
How many days it takes
-
Day of surgery
Admission, operation, and rest. Most patients stand and walk the same day.
-
Day 1 to 2
Discharge home in most cases, with medicines and instructions in writing.
-
Week 1 to 2
Many people return to desk work in this period.
-
Week 4 to 6
Heavy lifting and hard physical work are usually allowed only after the surgeon says so.
After you go home
- Walk a little every day from the first day
- Do not lift anything heavy until you are told you can
- Treat cough and constipation early, as both put strain on the repair
- Keep the review appointment

This page gives general information in simple words. It is not advice for your own case. What is right for you depends on your examination and your reports. Your doctor will explain your options and you decide.
Questions people ask us about this
Can a hernia be cured with medicine or a belt?
A belt may make you more comfortable, but it does not close the weak spot. Your surgeon will tell you whether surgery is needed in your case and when.
Is the mesh permanent?
The mesh stays in place and your own tissue grows into it. Your surgeon will explain the type used in your operation.
What if I ignore it?
Most hernias slowly get bigger. Sometimes the contents get stuck, which is an emergency. If your bulge becomes hard and painful and will not go back in, come to Emergency at once.
Will I be asleep during the operation?
For keyhole repair, usually yes. The anaesthetist will meet you before and explain.
Still deciding? That is fine.
